7 Affordable Meal Kits Seniors Actually Love

Cooking Tips for Making the Most of Your Meal Kit

Once your box arrives, a few simple habits can make the experience even more enjoyable. Here are some of my favorite cooking tips for using meal kits:

  • Read Everything First: Before you chop a single carrot, read the entire recipe card. This helps you understand the flow of the recipe and prevents any surprises, like realizing you need to preheat the oven halfway through.
  • Practice ‘Mise en Place’: This is a fancy French term for “everything in its place.” Simply take a few minutes to wash and chop all your vegetables and organize your spices and sauces before you start cooking. It makes the actual cooking process much smoother and more relaxing.
  • Use Your Own Favorite Tools: While the kits provide the food, you provide the tools. A good, sharp chef’s knife, a sturdy cutting board, and your favorite non-stick skillet can make a world of difference.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Improvise: Think of the recipe as a guideline, not a strict rule. If you love garlic, add an extra clove! If you have some fresh herbs in the garden, toss them in. Making the meal your own is part of the fun.
  • Save the Recipe Cards: I have a binder where I keep all my favorite recipe cards. If we particularly loved a dish, I can use the card as inspiration to try and recreate it myself with ingredients from the store.
