Gardening Therapy: How Plants Improve Senior Mental Health

September 8, 2025 · Lifestyle

Resources to Help You Cultivate Your Interests

As you begin your gardening journey, there are many wonderful organizations and resources that can offer guidance, inspiration, and community. Tapping into these networks can make your experience even richer and more enjoyable. A great starting point for any specific questions about your local soil or climate is your county’s Cooperative Extension Service office, often affiliated with a state university.

For lifestyle and community resources, AARP offers extensive articles and local chapters that can connect you with other active seniors and groups, some of which may have a gardening focus. If you’re interested in blending your passion for gardening with service, opportunities to give back can be found via AmeriCorps Seniors, which sometimes involves projects like maintaining community gardens or school green spaces.

Sometimes, the best inspiration comes from seeing nature’s grandeur. Travel and recreation information for seniors is available at the National Park Service, where a senior pass can open the door to America’s most beautiful natural “gardens.” Seeing these magnificent landscapes can inspire your own backyard creations. For local programs, such as community garden plots or gardening workshops for seniors, be sure to check your city or county’s Parks and Recreation department website.
