5 Best Retirement Places for Single Seniors

June 3, 2025 · Lifestyle

As we think about retirement, it’s important to remember that many people navigate this stage of life as singles. In 1970, approximately 12% of seniors lived independently, largely because of fewer divorces and lower widowhood rates. This percentage has increased substantially in recent years, with about 28% of individuals aged 65 and older living alone, representing about 16 million seniors in the U.S. Due to factors like divorce, never marrying, or losing a spouse, an increasing number of older adults are facing this reality.

As a result, choosing a place to live as a single senior becomes very important for both their health care needs and the cost of living. With just one income, living in a pricey city might not be feasible. Plus, being in a place without easy access to health care can really affect their quality of life and put extra stress on them.

Finding the perfect retirement location involves balancing practical necessities with personal lifestyle preferences. For single seniors grappling with the decision of where to retire, we created a list of the top five retirement destinations tailored for them. We considered factors such as the cost of living, healthcare access, climate, entertainment choices, walkability, community spirit, educational opportunities, and cultural offerings while curating our selection of the best retirement locations.

Let’s discover which five cities stand out.

Tucson, Arizona

With retiree-friendly tax policies in Arizona, such as the complete exemption of Social Security income from state taxes and property tax caps for seniors over 65, the cost of living is very manageable. These advantages make it easier for retirees to enjoy Tucson’s lively lifestyle while keeping their finances in check.

The city’s weather is an absolute delight, with a stunning 300 sunny days each year! This warm desert climate is just perfect for all kinds of outdoor adventures, whether you enjoy hiking or golfing. On top of that, the healthcare access here is excellent, thanks to Arizona’s solid reputation for quality medical facilities. Programs like Pima County’s annual benefits enrollment ensure seniors have no trouble finding health insurance and wellness resources to support their needs.

Tucson is a wonderful place that offers a delightful array of entertainment options. You can enjoy vibrant cultural festivals, explore charming art galleries, and indulge in a thriving dining scene that complements an engaging retirement lifestyle. While some areas are more walkable than others, neighborhoods like downtown are perfect for leisurely strolls, making it easy to access a variety of shops and beautiful parks. You’ll find the community to be incredibly welcoming, with Arizona’s friendly tax incentives drawing in a growing population of retirees.

Tucson’s lifelong learning programs and community workshops promote intellectual and artistic activities. Forbes recognized it as one of the top retirement locations. Tucson offers affordability, plenty of sunshine, and a vibrant community, rendering it an excellent option for single seniors in search of an engaging and rewarding retirement.

Sarasota, Florida

Sarasota, Florida, truly shines as a wonderful retirement destination for single seniors, offering a delightful mix of lifestyle, amenities, and community spirit. The cost of living here is quite reasonable compared to other coastal cities, making it possible for retirees to enjoy a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle without stretching their budgets too thin. Also, the access to quality healthcare is outstanding, featuring numerous hospitals and clinics that provide comprehensive services, which really helps ensure peace of mind for all residents.

Sarasota’s weather is absolutely delightful! With its warm and sunny climate all year round, it really invites everyone to enjoy outdoor activities and connect with friends and neighbors. The city offers a wonderful selection of entertainment options, from beautiful beaches and art galleries to theaters and a lively dining scene. For seniors, there are so many engaging cultural events to be part of, like the famous Ringling Museum and local festivals, making for a wonderfully rich cultural experience.

Sarasota’s walkability adds another advantage, especially in charming neighborhoods like downtown, where seniors can effortlessly visit shops, restaurants, and parks. The community radiates warmth and inclusivity, providing various clubs and organizations specifically designed for seniors, which foster social connections and friendships. Additionally, there is a wide variety of classes and workshops available, giving retirees the opportunity to discover new skills and engage in their favorite hobbies. Overall, Sarasota fosters a genuinely enriching atmosphere for single seniors to thrive throughout their retirement!
