Now, without further ado and long, boring introductions, let’s get to the point. Here’s a list of fun activities for seniors in New York.

 Visit the Statue of Liberty

You probably expected to see this on the list, so here it is: among all the activities for seniors in New York is visiting the Statue of Liberty with quite a great discount if you’re a senior over 62. There are several options, such as tickets for a guided 90-minute Hard Hat Tour of Ellis Island, tickets to climb the stairs and reach the Statue of Liberty’s crown, tickets to see the interior of the pedestal, or round-trip ferry tickets to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Seniors pay about $22 instead of about $32 for all Statue of Liberty options. However, it’s best to check the prices before visiting because they might differ.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

If you have never been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, maybe it’s time to do it! It’s a fun, affordable, and totally worthwhile activity for seniors in New York. Seniors pay $22 instead of $30 for general admission to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, popularly known as “The Met.” But same as other things on the list, we suggest you check the prices before going to any location.

Additionally, the amount paid is up to you as a resident of New York State (with a valid driver’s license or other form of identification), so you are free to pay less than the general admission prices if you so choose. The historic Met museum has a rooftop garden bar, a few cafés, and an impressive collection of art that dates back 5,000 years.

Botanical Garden

When it’s summertime the weather is hot… and you plan on spending more time outdoors, one of the best activities for seniors in New York besides picnicking in the park is to visit the botanical garden. This flower paradise offers an outstanding display of more than 1 million species of plants. You won’t be able to refrain from taking pics!

Admission to the New York Botanical Gardens, which includes daytime access to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and Tram Tour, as well as extra experiences like the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden and outdoor collections, costs $31 for seniors over 65 instead of $35.

Picnic in Central Park

As previously mentioned, Central Park is an amazing spot for any senior who enjoys being outside to pack some snacks, spread out a cozy blanket, and enjoy the simple joys of an afternoon picnic.  There is no better spot in the city to enjoy some sunshine, sandwiches, and fun conversation than this park, which offers an unrivaled view of the city and an abundance of park benches.

No wonder it was voted one of the most popular activities for seniors in New York!

Broadway matinees

Generally, if there aren’t any national holidays, most Broadway matinees are happening on Wednesdays and weekends, but we recommend looking up their website to see further schedule modifications. After all, it would be a pity not to enjoy world-class performances with great discounts for seniors!

Rock Observation Deck

Another popular attraction in New York City is the Top of the Rock observation deck which offers an outstanding view from above of Manhattan, and it’s worth taking a couple of pictures. Can you imagine being 70 floors up above the city?

For those who have never been here before, the Top of the Rock, which is located at Rockefeller Center, gives easy access to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Rockefeller Center skating rink, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, live television show tapings, and the stores and dining places on Fifth Avenue. Additionally, senior citizens’ admission tickets cost approximately $38.

…psst! Having GPS on your phone is helpful, no doubt, but what happens when the battery dies and you can’t charge it right away? Having a physical New York City map in your pocket is going to be super helpful! Foldable, printed on waterproof paper, and made to last any traveling conditions, this map is available on Amazon for only $9.25.

This incredibly user-friendly map contains the complete subway map, LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark airport diagrams; ferry routes; an easy-to-use index of streets, tunnels, and bridges; neighborhoods and districts, but also main city parks worth visiting; theaters; and other highlights that will help you plan your route and locate your destination fast. Order it while it’s still available!

Pottery and painting classes

Who would have thought that the Big Apple also offers these activities for seniors? Oh, well, for those who didn’t know, these classes are being held at Pottery-NYC and The Paint Place. If you want to cultivate a new hobby or allow yourself to discover your creative and artsy side that you probably never knew existed, it’s never too late to join the program.

For those who want to explore the pottery, you must know that all crafting supplies are provided by the instructors, and by the end of each module, you can take home your amazing creations so you can brag about them with your friends.

Check out their websites to see the price range and, of course, which classes appeal to you the most.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Keeping on the same artsy path, visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the activities seniors shouldn’t miss. For just $22 per ticket, you can see more than two million works of art by famous painters and sculptors from all over the world.

When you feel like your feet are hurting because the museum is quite big, stop by one of the cafés or the rooftop garden bar. You won’t regret it!

Culinary tour

We were talking at the beginning of the article about a culinary tour available, and it’s among those fun activities for seniors in New York City. While the Foods of New York Tours provides a variety of food tours in various neighborhoods, from Chinatown to Greenwich Village, the Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour takes you on a tour of, you guessed it, Brooklyn’s pizza hotspots.

You will be able to learn about the history and culture of the city’s varied culinary scene while sampling small portions of various dishes. Mmm…yummy! If this doesn’t appeal to you or it’s a bit too expensive, you could make your tour focusing on your favorite restaurants but also exploring new locations. In either case, you can enjoy delectable meals and get your body moving while walking from one place to another.
