Understanding Medicare Supplements: What’s Worth Paying For

A Financial Checklist for Choosing a Medicare Supplement

Navigating your medicare plans can feel overwhelming. Follow this simple checklist to stay on track and make a confident decision.

First, confirm your enrollment dates. Pinpoint the exact six-month window of your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This is tied to your 65th birthday and your Part B effective date. Mark these dates on your calendar.

Second, analyze your needs and risk tolerance. Take an honest look at your health and your finances. If you value predictable, fixed costs and want to avoid any large, unexpected bills, Plan G is likely your best choice. If you are in good health and want to save on premiums in exchange for small copays, Plan N is a strong contender.

Third, gather a list of available insurers. Go to the official Medicare.gov website and use their tool to find which companies sell Medigap policies in your ZIP code. This is the most reliable and unbiased source of information.

Fourth, compare quotes for the same plan. Choose the plan you are interested in (e.g., Plan G) and get premium quotes from at least three different A-rated insurance companies on your list. Remember, the benefits are identical, so you are shopping on price and company reputation.

Fifth, ask the important questions. For each quote, ask about the pricing method (attained-age, issue-age, or community-rated) to understand how your premium will increase over time. Also, inquire about any available household discounts.

Finally, apply for your chosen plan. Once you have made your decision, complete the application well within your Open Enrollment Period. This will secure your guaranteed issue right and give you lasting financial protection against high healthcare costs.
