How to Have Honest Family Conversations About Inherited Items
Open communication prevents misunderstandings and hurt feelings between generations. Avoid waiting for an emergency or estate clean out to ask what your children want.
Invite your adult children over for a casual walk-through of your home. Give them explicit permission to speak honestly without fearing they will offend you.
Ask direct questions such as: “Do you have space in your home for this dining set?” or “Would you use this china service?”
If your children say no, accept their answer with grace. Remember that their refusal of an object does not mean they do not appreciate your parenting or shared history.
