How to Cope With Empty Nest Syndrome in Your 60s

Navigating this transition is a personal journey, but there are concrete, safe steps you can take to make it a positive one. The goal is to build a new routine that honors your past while enthusiastically embracing your future.

Step 1: Acknowledge and Validate Your Feelings

The first and most important step is to give yourself permission to feel whatever you are feeling—sadness, anxiety, relief, or a confusing mix of everything. Do not dismiss your emotions or tell yourself you “should” be happy. This is a significant loss of a role you’ve held for years. Talk about your feelings with your partner, a trusted friend, or a family member. Writing in a journal can also be a powerful way to process your thoughts without judgment.

Whether it’s a book club, a gardening group, or a walking club, shared activities are a fantastic way to build new connections.

Step 4: Rediscover Old Passions and Find New Ones

What did you love to do before you had children? What have you always wanted to learn? Now is your time. Consider taking a class at a local community college—perhaps in art, history, or a new language. Pick up that guitar that’s been sitting in the corner. Join a pickleball league or a gentle tai chi class. Filling your time with activities that genuinely interest you creates a new structure for your days and a renewed sense of engagement with life.

Step 5: Focus on Your Personal Health and Wellness
