Key Signs It’s Time to Consult a Doctor or Specialist

While home modifications can vastly improve your quality of life, they are part of a larger arthritis care plan. It is crucial to know when to seek professional guidance. Do not hesitate to contact your doctor or an occupational therapist if you experience any of the following:

  • A Sudden Increase in Pain or Stiffness: If your joint pain suddenly worsens, becomes sharp, or is accompanied by significant swelling and redness, it could signal a flare-up or another underlying issue.
  • Difficulty with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): If you find you are consistently struggling with basic self-care tasks such as bathing, dressing, using the toilet, or preparing simple meals despite making modifications, it’s a sign you need more support.
  • You Have Had a Recent Fall: Any fall, even one that doesn’t seem to cause a serious injury, should be discussed with your doctor. It could indicate issues with balance, medication side effects, or a need for a more comprehensive home safety assessment.
  • Feeling Overwhelmed or Unsure Where to Start: If you know you need to make changes but feel overwhelmed by the options, an occupational therapist (OT) is the perfect resource. OTs are experts in assessing a person’s home and abilities, and they can provide personalized recommendations for modifications and assistive devices. Your doctor can provide a referral.
  • New Weakness or Numbness: If you experience new or worsening weakness, numbness, or tingling in your limbs, seek medical attention promptly, as this could be a sign of nerve involvement.

Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength. Your healthcare team is there to help you live as safely and independently as possible.
