7 Gentle Exercises to Improve Mobility After 60

Key Signs It’s Time to Consult a Doctor

While gentle exercise is overwhelmingly safe and beneficial, it is crucial to pay close attention to your body’s signals. Certain symptoms should never be ignored. Your health and safety are the top priorities, and pushing through pain or discomfort can lead to injury. Stop exercising immediately and consult your physician or seek prompt medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • Sharp, stabbing, or sudden pain in any muscle or joint. While mild soreness is normal, sharp pain is a warning sign that something is wrong.
  • Chest pain, pressure, or tightness. This could be a sign of a serious cardiac issue and requires immediate medical evaluation.
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint. These symptoms can indicate issues with blood pressure, hydration, or other underlying conditions.
  • Shortness of breath that does not resolve with rest. Feeling a little out of breath during exercise is one thing, but struggling to breathe is a red flag.
    • Sudden or unusual swelling in your ankles, feet, or legs.

    – Numbness or tingling in your arms or legs.
    – A feeling of instability or a “giving way” sensation in a joint, particularly the knee or hip.

It’s also a good idea to speak with your doctor before starting if you have chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, severe arthritis, or have recently had surgery. A healthcare professional can provide personalized guidance to ensure your chosen mobility routines are perfectly suited for you.
